Research, Research Team

The economic docket will carry a significant round of scheduled event risk this coming week, but there are big ticket items that can’t be pegged with a specific number to gauge whether it is a ‘strong’ or ‘weak’ outcome. Top, known event risk over the period is the Fed rate decision on Wednesday and the EU’s decision on whether to pay the Greece aid tranche on Thursday. Neither is particularly easy to draw a bead on.

The US central bank is expected to replace its expiring Operation Twist program which was responsible for $45 billion in longer-term Treasury purchases a month. The market expects it, so an increased QE3 or introduction of a new QE4 may not be immediately interpreted as a reason for equities and high yield currencies to rally (and the US dollar to tumble). As for the Greece payment, this could put a stopper in the Euro-area crisis (at least Greece’s part in it) for a period of time. Again, the market expects the aid to be paid, so it will be a difficult read as much of the ‘positive’ outcome is likely priced in already.

And, we cannot ignore the ill-define but certainly overwhelming concern in the US Fiscal Cliff. The countdown continues to the end of the year (House rules actually say no bills can be introduced past the 18th) and the threat of automatic spending cuts and tax hikes has most economists and market participations concerned that this will be the defining moment for the US to avoid or plunge into recession.
