Strategy Video: Beware Greece, China and Fed Theme Sparks

John Kicklighter, Chief Strategist

Talking Points:

• Event risk can lead to substantial volatility, but particular themes are more capable of developing trends

• Three of the top themes for moving the markets these past weeks and months have been Greece, China and the Fed

• In the next 24 hours, we have key event risk (reform deadline, China GDP and Yellen testimony) for all three

Some of the financial market's most volatile-inducing and trend-generating fundamental themes are facing key catalysts in the upcoming trading session. The speculative ranks are no doubt already marking the countdown to China's 2Q GDP, Greece's deadline for reforms and Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen's testimony; but all three deserve much closer review. If we look back to the most aggressive and pervasive market moves over the past weeks and months, particular developments stand out. The negotiations between Greece and its creditors has been particularly intense with specific deadlines coming to pass while China has drawn attention for its incredible market swing. For comprehensive influence, the interest rate focus on the Fed - and thereby the US Dollar - has proven one of the most long-lasting motivators in years. While these events may not jump start bigger swings in all scenarios, their scope for market impact demands our attention and preparation. We discuss all three events in today's Strategy Video.
