Research, Research Team

The past week has been loaded with key event risk and we have seen remarkable volatility arise from the fundamental catalysts. We are still lacking for that singular drive that can tap into the underlying interests of the market (most likely market-wide and asset-wide risk trends) that can feed consistent trends. Yet, the elements for speculative interests to careen or surge are there. Either a uniform upgrade in stimulus encourages ‘sidelined capital’ to chase the next leg higher for equities and carry or fear overrides the reckless abandon the central banks are creating.

For event risk moving forward, we have serious short-term catalysts that may also tap into the deeper currents that can stir trends. Of particular interest next week are the Friday US Change in NFPs, preceded by the FOMC rate decision on Wednesday. The latter is the ultimate interest in competitive stimulus and debate of an early end to QE3 purchases (which is a serious brace for risk taking). The former is the lynchpin to stimulus as the Fed is looking for a 6.5% Unemployment Rate to change its policy bearings.

Top event risk for the week is the ECB Rate Decision. Speculation that the ECB will cut rates has soared amongst economists and in the media, but you can see from the Euro itself that the market is not yet convinced. This could prove a very market-moving event; if no rate cut comes, the Euro could gain value quickly.
