  • The Canadian dollar continues to outperform against most of its major counterparts, with USD/CAD at risk of test the lower bounds of its recent range amid the ongoing improvement in Canada Employment; will keep a close eye on the Relative Strength Index (RSI) ahead of the Bank of Canada’s (BoC) interest rate decision on April 12 as the oscillator appears to be reacting to former trendline support.
  • Even though the BoC warns the ‘Bank’s three measures of core inflation, taken together, continue to point to material excess capacity in the economy,’ signs of a stronger labor market paired with the 253.7K print for Canada Housing Starts may push central bank officials to drop their dovish tone as the gauge for building activity marks the highest reading since 2007; at the same time, the recent pickup in oil may become a growing concern as the stickiness in crude prices raises the threat of second-round effects on the real economy.
  • Nevertheless, Governor Stephen Poloz appears to be in no rush to lift the benchmark interest rate off of the record-low as the central bank head warns against normalizing monetary policy prematurely; in turn, more of the same from the BoC may limit the downside risk for USD/CAD especially as the Federal Reserve appears to be on course to implement higher borrowing-costs over the coming months.
  • With USD/CAD still capped by the Fibonacci overlap around 1.3450 (23.6% retracement) to 1.3460 (61.8% retracement), the first downside hurdle comes in around 1.3280 (50% retracement) to 1.3310 (38.2% retracement), which coincides with the April low (1.3295), followed by 1.3200 (61.8% retracement).

  • AUD/USD appears to be tracking the range carried over from 2016 as it remains capped by the Fibonacci overlap around 0.7730 (61.8% retracement) to 0.7770 (61.8% expansion), and the break of the March low (0.7491) accompanied by the ongoing series of lower highs & lows keeps the near-term outlook tilted to the downside especially as the Relative Strength Index (RSI) preserves the bearish formation from February; will keep a close eye on the oscillator as it approaches oversold territory given the reaction seen late last year.
  • Even though Australia’s Employment report in anticipated to show a 20.0K rebound in job growth, the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) Financial Stability Review may dampen the appeal of the higher-yielding currency as the central bank warns ‘growth in household borrowing, largely to purchase housing, continues to outpace growth in household income’ and Governor Philip Lowe and Co. may increase their efforts to tame interest-rate expectations amid the ‘build-up of risks associated with the housing market;’ nevertheless, may see the Australian dollar face a similar reaction as it did with the RBA Minutes as the central bank largely endorses a wait-and-see approach for monetary policy.
  • With that said, market participants may pay increased attention to the fresh rhetoric coming out of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), with another batch of 2017-voting members (Fed Chair Janet Yellen, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari and Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan) scheduled to speak over the coming days; will continue to monitor interest-rate expectations as Fed Fund Futures are now pricing a greater than 60% probability for a June rate-hike amid the growing discussion to adjust the balance sheet in late-2017.
  • A closing price below the 0.7500 (50% retracement) handle shifts the focus to the next downside target around 0.7450 (38.2% retracement) followed by the Fibonacci overlap around 0.7410 (23.6% expansion) to 0.7420 (61.8% retracement).
