Swiss Consumer Confidence Unexpectedly Improves, But Fails to Impress

By David Song, Currency Analyst

The Swiss SECO consumer confidence index unexpectedly improved to -23 from a five-year low of -27 in October amid expectations for a decline to -36. The breakdown of the report showed that the gauge for job security slipped to -99 from -61 in the previous quarter, while the economic outlook for the next 23 months ticked higher to -57 from -61. Despite the minor uptick in sentiment, as the Swiss National Bank forecasts economic activity to contract further this year, households are likely to hold a pessimistic outlook for growth as they face a weakening labor market paired with financial uncertainties.
