Ecuador's President Says They Will Default on 'Illegal Foreign Debt'

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said this afternoon that "the country is in default" and that they would not pay outstanding "illegal" debt, ahead of a $31 million coupon payment due on Monday.  Mr. Correa threatened to stop paying it last month, and has suggested they may do so since taking office in 2007. US stock markets remain down, and while this announcement wasn't entirely unexpected, it does add to the risk aversion that we've been seeing throughout the day following the US Senate's failure to pass an auto sector bailout bill and speculation over whether or not theWhite House will step in and utilize TARP funding in order to salvage the plan. Futhermore, the news may lead traders to be a bit more cautious when it comes to emerging market assets.
