New Zealand retail sales unexpectedly rose in February by 0.2% after economists had forecast the figure to slump by -0.5%. The unexpected figure is the strongest of such since September, when sales rose 0.3%. Since then, no month had seen sales rise.

When excluding car, fuel, and outlet purchases, the metric actually slumped 0.1%.
