The US Commerce Department reported that factory orders rose 0.6 percent in October, marking the second straight increase following September's rise of 1.6 percent. The data was better than expected, since forecasts had called for no change in light of the 0.6 percent decline in durable goods orders during the same period. Nevertheless, broad gains in shipments and orders of consumer goods helped prop the overall index higher as retailers prepared for the holiday shopping season.
