Swiss Consumption Indicator Strengthens in September

The Swiss UBS Consumption Indicator strengthened in September, with the index rising 0.632 from a revised reading of 0.623 in the previous month.  The data which remained near a 6-year low provides indication that consumer sentiment remains subdued as households scaled back spending with rising unemployment.  Despite, the positive indicator level hinting at a modest rise in private consumption, businesses may continue to cut back on production and employment as global trade conditions remain weak.  Meanwhile, the Swiss National Bank may keep interest rates at 0.25% at the quarterly monetary policy assessment in December to ensure growth going into next year as the Swiss recession has probably bottomed. Last week, policy makers made it clear that the SNB will not raise rates until “the feeling the economic recovery is well established,” as stated by Chairman Jean-Pierre Roth. Going forward, investors will be monitoring the consumer price index and the unemployment rate on November 5th and 6th respectively for assurance that the economy has indeed stabilized. If released better-than-expected, the Usd/Chf may trade at a fresh yearly low, falling below 1.0029.
